I am launching the idea of supporting custom maps and a way to switch between SD maps and custom maps, and even overlay the two map sets.
Here is why: I have been using Air Navigation Pro for about two years. I have been happy with ANP, but recently my friends claimed SD was much better. So I decided to try out the free trial SD. I was simply impressed! The features of SD are far superior over ANP. Now after 3 weeks of trial, there is no doubt: I am switching to full SD license!
But now - the maps: the SD maps are very different from the ANP ICAO maps. The SD maps are far less cluttered and show air spaces and other important information much clearer. That is great when you are not navigating by roads, rivers, and other details on the ground, in which case the ANP ICAO maps are much better since they show all those details.
So when I am now using SD I have to use another map program if I need to look for details on the ground. That map program is Locus, an amazing map program available for Android only. People should check it out on Google Play. On my Android tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 editon) switching between apps are smooth and quick, so running SD and Locus at the same time and switching between them solves the map issue for me.
Now my idea: different map sets in SD. I have downloaded several GBs of great Locus maps, among others offline Google maps and topo maps, and it would be terrific if I could switch map sets within SD, depending upon what kind of maps would meets the needs at the moment. I would use SD maps for all normal flights, but if should need to look for a road, small town, a river, a cabin, ..., then I could switch to a topo or Google classic or whatever map set. Locus maps are stored in SQlite data base format. May be SD also could support ICAO maps.
Switching maps could be an entry in the menu that pops up when you tap the compass arrow upper right on the SD screen. Either a switch to toggle between the two map sets, or may be a way to select one of the map sets or both so the two maps sets could overlay.
What do you think?
